How is it with your soul?

John Wesley required the early Methodists to be a part of a covenant group, which was almost like a support group of 5-6 people that met weekly for the express purpose of discussing with each other the state of their soul. Consider it a more substantive version of the political pomp and circumstance of the SOTU earlier this week, where they actually shared meaningful discussions about their faith journeys and struggles.

The question that was asked was most often, “How is it with your soul?” This was their version of asking, “Did you feel close to God, or farther away from God this week?” I think it’s an exceptionally appropriate question for Christians to consider on a weekly, if not daily, basis, and I’ve started to think more and more about it, and about how my answers should affect my daily faith.
